It's an ongoing issue with few solutions. Funding for two new fire stations in Lafayette that supporters say the city needs if it wants to keep its fire rating. It was touched upon at this past city-parish council meeting. Members discussed possible funding sources.
Funding for arts organizations such as Festival International may be on the chopping block in order fund things like two new fire stations. Councilor Jared Bellard brought the idea up at this past week's meeting, To take city parish funding used for social service groups and art organizations and use that money towards things that are not luxury.
But taking funding away could do more harm than good.
"It (Festival International) generates an estimated $22 million. It goes right back to general fund, it's something which benefits all of us" says Festival International Director Kim Neustrom.
The council still has no set plans on how to fund the fire stations.
