On Thursday, April 14, 2011 at approximately 1030 hours the Broussard Police Department was dispatched to a major vehicle crash in the 5700 block of US 90.  Upon officers arrival they observed that a cement truck was overturned on top of a Dodge Ram pickup and the occupants in the pickup were trapped in the vehicle.  Once the driver (Kevin Buteaux, 38 yoa from New Iberia, LA) of the Dodge pickup was extricated he was transported to a local hospital with moderate injuries.

The investigation so far has revealed that both vehicles were headed East on US 90 when the White Dodge pickup began to slow and turn right in to the driveway of the business, the cement truck was unable to stop in time and went right off road and struck the culvert of the driveway where the Dodge was turning into causing the cement truck to overturn onto the top of the Dodge pickup.  The passenger of the Dodge, Christopher Grimmett W/M 24 yoa of Lafayette, LA, was pronounced dead on the scene. The driver of the cement truck Peter Gullory Jr. W/M 40 y/o of Opelousas, LA was transported to a local hospital for minor injuries. Both the driver and the occupant of the Dodge were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash but due to the severity of the cement truck crushing the passenger compartment of the Dodge the passenger sustained fatal injuries.

Alcohol involvement is not suspected at this time but we are waiting for toxicology reports to come back on both drivers blood.  The driver of the cement truck will be charged with Careless Operation of a Motor Vehicle at this time but other charges are possible.
