A saltwater injection site, used by an Oklahoma based oil company, has many residents worried in Gueydan.
There are currently two locations in Gueydan used for saltwater injection, and just last week one of them sprung a leak.
Residents say they believe these injection wells are leaking waste into the ground that is getting into their drinking water, causing some to get cancer.
A chemist who is researching the wells says the waste water does in fact contain materials that could lead to certain cancers.
The material being discharged is contains organic hydrocarbons and saltwater and potentially contains toxic heavy metals.
Officials with Toas Energy, which is waiting on permit approval to put in their own injection well, say there is no link between salt water injection wells and cancer.
