Veterinary medical experts say our nation's animal overpopulation problem is reaching epidemic proportions.

Each year, more than two million animals are euthanized in animal shelters across the country, simply because there were not enough homes to go around.

Now, the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine is teaming up with local animal shelters to help solve the problem.

The LSU veterinary school mobile spay-neuter clinic is bringing hope and lots of help to municipal animal shelters around the state.

The vet clinic on wheels provides spay-neuter procedures to animals up for adoption at the shelter.

While the veterinary students, led by their professor, Dr. Wendy Wolfson, get much needed practical, hands on experience, the dogs and cats get a second chance at life.

Each spay neuter procedure means the prevention of literally hundreds of unwanted puppies and kittens, and it means that pets like the ones at the St. Martin Parish Shelter may be able to realize the dream of having a forever home, all their own.

For more click the video link, if you'd like to adopt any of the beautiful pets featured in our report, just visit the St. Martin Parish Animal Control Center at 1004 Industrial Park Road in St. Martinsville.

Adoption hours are Monday through Friday from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM and on weekends by appointment only.

You can also contact Shelter Director Monique Louvier at 394-1220.
