Dr. Abshire is a native of Kaplan, Louisiana. He attended Tulane University in New Orleans and the University of Southwestern Louisiana in Lafayette to obtain his undergraduate degree prior to entering Tulane University School Of Medicine where he received his medical degree with honors in 1972. He completed residency requirements in Internal Medicine at Tulane in 1975 and returned to Kaplan to practice from 1975-76. In 1976, he entered the Gastroenterology Fellowship at Oschner Medical Foundation in New Orleans, where he completed training in 1978. In July, 1978, he began his practice in Lafayette at the Gastroenterology Clinic of Acadiana, where he continues to practice today. He is the founder and Medical Director of Lafayette General Endoscopy Center, which began as an extension of his office and became Saints Streets Endoscopy Center in 1988. The center continued to expand and that growth resulted in the building of the new state-of-the-art endoscopy center, which opened in July, 2009, renamed to reflect the corporate partner of the center, Lafayette General Medical Center.
Dr. Abshire began teaching Gastroenterology fellows at Tulane University in 2005 to assist following Hurricane Katrina, which resulted in a loss of faculty in the GI section. He continues to serve in that capacity today, and enjoys instructing the new generation of gastroenterologists. He is recognized as a leader in the capability and advantages of High Definition endoscopy and the increase in polyp detection rate due to this technology. He is a published author and speaker on this subject.
