January 2010.
Everyone is interested in starting off the new year by eating healthy and starting an exercise program. The Health Information Center is offering free health information to help you make wise health decisions for yourself and your family. It is very important to start a weight management plan that works. There are five steps to this plan:
- 1. Get Started - First, try to see yourself differently. There's a new, healthier you waiting to break through.
- 2. Know How Much to Lose - Find out what your weight range should be by using a weight table or formula. Then, set your target weight-loss goal.
- 3. Keep Records - Record your eating and activity habits to help determine your present patterns. Keeping records can also help you chart your weight loss.
- 4. Substitute Behavior - Once you recognize your old patterns, you can substitute new, positive behaviors for your old, unwanted ones. A good place to start is by passing up those high-fat snacks. Try a bike ride instead or a walk.
- 5. Balance Eating and Activity - Balance the calories you take in (eating) with the calories you burn off (activity) to help maintain your target weight.
Additional informational pamphlets are available from the Health Information Center, such as: "Weight Management For Better Health", " Weight Control: Eating Right and Keeping Fit" (for women), "Walking For Fitness - Safe Aerobic Exercise For Everyone", and "Exercise and Fitness" (for women). These pamphlets can be mailed upon request. To request this free information, call (337) 988-1816 or log on to www.womansfoundation.com.
January 2010.
According to the pamphlet, "About Grief", grief is a healthy, human response to situations such as:
- the death of a loved one
- separation or divorce
- miscarriage
- injury or disability
- the loss of a job, property or pet
- children leaving home.
Often, the greatest loss we experience is when a loved one dies. Grief is a painful experience, but the pain does subside. Understanding grief can help you: face the reality and deal with feelings or fear, loneliness, despair and helplessness and recover and grow to be a stronger person. Accepting your loss can help you live a happy, full life again. Grief is part of the healing process. Grieving people share certain feelings: shock and denial; anger; guilt; depression;
loneliness; and hope.
Living with loss, you must take care of your emotional needs: express your feelings, accept help, ask for help and be kind to yourself. You must also take care of your physical needs: get plenty of rest, stay healthy, be alert for problems and contact your health-care provider promptly for advice if you have any signs of health problems.
The Health Information Center has free pamphlets available: "About Grief" for adults and "When Someone You Love Dies" for young children. To request this free information, call Rose Hoffman Cormier at (337) 988-1816 or log on to www.womansfoundation.com.

CAREER CONNECTIONS 2010
Share your career with over 4,000 10th graders at the Eleventh Annual Career Connections Expo and Reality Store on Thursday, January 28, 2010, at the Cajundome Convention Center. Students from Lafayette, Iberia, Vermilion, and St. Martin parishes will have the opportunity to explore a variety of career opportunities and meet the professionals who perform these jobs on a daily basis. In turn, professionals have the opportunity to share the tools of their careers and their expertise with our future workforce.
In order to be successful, this event needs more than 100 businesses to share career opportunities with these students. The cost for booth space is $125. In addition, more than 300 community volunteers are needed to assist with the Reality Store, an exhibit area where students become aware of the realities of living expenses and the link between choices they make about education and career.
If you are interested in sharing your profession in the expo, serving as a volunteer in the Reality Store, or sponsoring the expo, please call (337) 262-5962, Ext. 115 for more detailed information. Don't miss this opportunity to invest in the workforce of the future!
