Five Principals in the Saint Landry School District will be moved from majority white and black schools of their race, to schools where they are in the racial minority. This move is part of the ongoing desegregation case in the parish.
One principal in particular is not happy about the move and says her school was unfairly targeted.
Elsie Simean is currently the principal of South Street elementary, a predominantly white school.
In South Street's revolving 55 year history the school has only had two black principals.
So Semien wants to know if her school doesn't fit Federal Court Judge Tucker Melancon's profile then why is she on the list? The Judge is asking for schools that are historically radically racially identifiable. Semien says moving her from south street would not satisfy the desegregation case.
The St. Landry School Board said they weren't provided enough information and history when they approved the five schools back in February. The group unanimously approved a new motion.
Superintendent Nassif and School Board President John Miller will present US Federal Court Judge Tucker Melancon with south side's in depth history and ask for his opinion regarding the school.
Based on his suggestion the board will consider at next month's meeting whether South Side Elementary and its principal will remain a part of the principal shuffle.
These are the moves the school board approved in February:
- Mary Miller will move from Krotz Springs to South Street Elementary
- Matthew Scruggins from Arnaudville to North Elementary
- Jerome Robinson from North to Krotz Springs Elementary
- Elsie Simean from South Street to Arnaudville
South Street Elementary is still scheduled to make the move but that could change in the coming weeks.
