Dozens of phone numbers, all on the website of Deborah Jean Palfrey, better known as the DC Madam, and now a Louisiana senator is caught in a Washington sex scandal.
The madam is accused of running a prostitution ring in Washington DC and claims to have serviced many high ranking government officials.
Until Vitter's apology the most prominent client to surface from these phone records was senior state department official Randall Tobias. Tobias resigned from his post in April.
Jeanette Maier, also known as the Canal Street Madam claims Senator Vitter would pay her about $300 an hour. She says the senator began visiting her mid-city operations in the mid-90's.
Maier also claims her little black book contains the names of at least 20 other Louisiana politicians, but she says Senator Vitter was one of the nicer customers.
For now Vitter says he's made amends with his family and as far as we know intends to stay in office.
He issued a statement Monday stating, "This was a very serious sin in my past for which I am, of course, completely responsible."
He went onto say quote, "Several years ago, I asked for and received forgiveness from God and my wife in confession and marriage counseling. Out of respect for my family, I will keep my discussion of the matter there, with God and them. But I will certainly offer my deep and sincere apologies to all I have disappointed and let down in any way."
Vitter first went to Washington after the resignation of Representative Robert Livingston, who admitted to extramarital affairs before quitting Congress.
When Vitter's wife was asked about the marital scandals surrounding former Representative Livingston and former President Bill Clinton in 2000 she said, "I'm more like Lorena Bobbit than Hillary, if he does something like that, I'm walking away with one thing, and it's not alimony, trust me."
