Board Considers Changing Name of Northside High

The long debate over changing the name of a major Lafayette thoroughfare to Martin Luther King Boulevard has now gone to the school board.

Wednesday night, the board agreed to consider changing the name of Northside High School to Martin Luther King High.

Board member Rickey Hardy suggested the board put together a multi-cultural staff to look into the possible name change.

He goes on to say a name change like this will also show that Lafayette is a diverse hub.

Hardy says Lafayette has no high school in the school system named Eastside High, Westside High, or Southside High. He says in his opinion, Northside is a direction. He says Dr. Martin Luther King stood for the principals of all people.

If the board decides to change the name of the school, it won't happen until the 2007 school year.

Also Wednesday night, Kay Gibson was elected the board's new president.

She says there are two things she would like to see the board work on -- education programs and alternate funding sources.
