State Tests Thrown Out for Cheating

Hundreds of Louisiana students have been accused of some form of cheating on a state standardized test.

According to information provided to us by the state Department of Education, scores for 600 LEAP and IOWA tests have been thrown in the garbage.

The state says about 600 children are suspected of some sort of cheating, whether the cheating was intentional or unintentional.

First here's a look at where some of these tests come from.

Lafayette - 56 (53 LEAP, 3 IOWA)

Evangeline - 9 (All LEAP)

Iberia - 6 (All LEAP)

St. Landry - 7 (6 LEAP, 1 IOWA)

St. Mary - 5 (4 LEAP, 1 IOWA)

Allen - 2 (All LEAP)

St. Martin - 1 (LEAP)

The IOWA Test helps measure school accountability and the LEAP Test determines if 4th and 8th graders advance to the next grade level.

Many educators agree there is a lot of pressure on students and at times, it may lead them to cheat.

But on the flip side, another long-time educator says there is an immense amount of pressure on teachers.

Mary Washington/Teacher: For the most part, I don't believe there is direct cheating. But is there enough pressure to cause people to cheat if they believe their jobs or their children's future, perhaps so...

We must clarify that while 600 tests statewide may seen like a large number, there are thousands upon thousands of children who attend Louisiana's public schools who have not had their test results thrown out.
