The stereotypical view of pit bulls is that they are angry and aggressive dogs. But, members of the Louisiana SPCA see them differently.
They say the dogs are normally very loving. But, the dogs bred for professional fighting are a breed apart. Their trainer puts them on special equipment, like treadmills, and then eventually, they get hurt in illegal dog fights.
One of the dogs seized in Franklinton had both of his ears bitten off.
State police say 32-year-old Darren Williams of Franklinton is the man who trained and fought the dogs. On the land he leases, state police seized more than 100 pit bulls.
Troopers say they learned about Williams following an arrest in Church Point.
As officials were arresting him, Williams remarked, "I think it's a witch hunt. Look how clean my animals are! And, they're going to take them and kill them!"
Prize fighters like the ones seized are worth between $20,000 and $50,000, so people may try to steal them. Or worse, hurt the people who take them. That's why SPCA members, like "Top Dog," want to remain anonymous.
"These dogs will be euthanized through no fault of their own, you know, it's all about the people," explains "Top Dog."
Police say Williams hid his dogs in the woods and even performed his own veterinary work to keep them hidden. But, state troopers say dog-fighters normally do more than that.
According to Trooper Johnnie Brown:
"You have narcotics, you have money laundering, so you have many more crimes going on than just the simple act of dog-fighting."
That's why state police hope the newly seized dogs will lead them to yet another arrest. Williams is charged with cruelty to animals, dog-fighting and simple possession of marijuana.
State police also arrested 32-year-old Keith Warren of Franklinton. He's facing the same charges as Williams, along with money laundering and possession of crack.
