E-Mail Wars Over Dog Raid

A war of words has started over the arrests of a Broussard man and his son on dog-fighting charges. Those defending Floyd and Guy Boudreaux's pit bull kennel are calling for an animal rights worker's job, while others are thankful the business has been shut down.

The heading on the petition is short and to the point...fire Laura Maloney. Maloney is the executive director for the Louisiana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, or SPCA. Her organization killed 56 pit bulls after they were confiscated from the Boudreauxs' property.

An e-mail petition with hundreds of unverified signatures from all over the world is being sent to Governor Blanco's office calling for Maloney's job, stating, "She has a complete lack of knowledge as to the genetic inheritance in dogs."

But, no action will probably be taken as a result of the petition. The SPCA is a non-profit organization and neither the state nor Governor Blanco has authority over the office.

According to state law, fighting dogs seized are declared contraband and the officer may cause them to be humanely euthanized as soon as possible with no civil or criminal liability.

Maloney says that's the reason the dogs were put to sleep so soon after the raid. She tells TV 10 the backlash stems from the fact Floyd Boudreaux sells his dogs all over the country and she admits the dogs' bloodlines are strong.

But, Maloney says investigators have tremendous evidence proving the dogs were involved in dog-fighting. She says the SPCA office has been flooded with e-mails. Some were threatening, like one stating, "It's time to hunker down, organize an army and kick some ---.

Maloney says many other e-mails thank the office for its work to end the dogs' misery and protect the public. Maloney says dogs trained for fighting cannot be rehabilitated. She says these dogs even started attacking each other while being transported.

The Louisiana SPCA Office released a statement on their web site Wednesday, claiming the office does not support breed bans and fights hard for American Pit Bull Terrier rights.
