Duson Police Chief Case Begins

The District Attorney's office in Lafayette has finally begun their case against the former Police Chief of Duson accused of stealing money from the city.

Because TJ Johnfore is the former Police Chief of Duson the DA says it is a case that sort of took on a life of its own when the initial word came out.

Initally it was believed Johnfore was being accused of stealing thousands of dollars from the city, but now we're being told that number is significantly lower, amounting anywhere from $300 to $750, at least thats what the District Attorney claims they can prove.

These accusations cover the time period from late 2008 to early 2009.

Johnfore has been persistent in proclaiming his innocence since leaving his position in June.

But, prosecutors say they've got a paper trail of evidence they plan on presenting in court that proves otherwise.

"On occasion a person would want to pay a traffic fine perhaps the regular office was closed or the person who would normally collect the fines wasn't there he would collect the money from them in some cases even gave receipts to them but there was no record of the money being transferred over to the proper custodian with the city." says DA Mike Harson.

This case is slated to be presented to the grand jury on December 16th, Johnfore is not required to be show up.

If convicted he faces anywhere up to five years in prison.
