Baton Rouge police are warning drivers to buckle up after a tragic accident that left five people dead.
It's a scene so many have seen before. But this time, it's one that some say they wish they hadn't witnessed. Tammy Hall says it's the most devastating thing she's ever seen.
Tammy Hall "I just saw vehicle flip about three or four times, and kids flying everywhere, looked to be about 10 to 11 kids."
State Police say 15 people were inside a van, with Louisiana plates headed west to Baton Rouge. Between the Prairieville and Highland Road Exits is where authorities believe the van had a blowout and sideswiped a pizza truck. Witnesses say the driver of the van overcorrected, overturned and ended up on the other side of the interstate.
Witnesses say 13 children were thrown from the van. The driver and passenger, were partially ejected. Troopers say they were the only two wearing seatbelts.
Tammy: "The most devastating thing I've seen in my life. I am CPR/healthcare provider, so I attempted to do CPR on some of the kids."
Those attempts, she says - for some were too late. Five people died.
Sheriff Wiley: "We have four beautiful children, on the interstate that are covered with a tarp, fatalities."
Ten others are in critical condition. Sheriff Wiley says the scene is frustrating. He says too many people were in the van and the most frustrating of all, children lost their lives.
Sheriff Wiley: "Points out the fragile nature of life and death, particularly when you're going 70 miles an hour."
Sheriff Wiley says one mistake changed several lives. At least one person was airlifted from the scene.
