Bogalusa mayor, among 4 arraigned on bribe charges

Associated Press - November 23, 2009 4:24 PM ET

FRANKLINTON, La. (AP) - Bogalusa Mayor Mack McGehee, City Marshal Wayne Adams and two others have pleaded not guilty to bribery and other charges from last year's election for city marshal.

City Councilman Danny Stogner and former councilman Thomas Kates also were arraigned Monday in state district court. All four are charged with bribery of a withdrawn candidate, criminal conspiracy and election code violation.

The bribery charge alleges that someone paid a candidate who quit a race to endorse one who was still running. Because it carries up to a year in prison and $10,000 fine, defendants can choose jury trials.

Judge William Knight told them to decide by a Jan. 28 motion date. He scheduled the trial for Feb. 18.

Kates dropped out of the marshal's race without saying why, shortly after entering it.
