It was a beautiful day outside, and as many enjoyed the weather and sunshine, some took advantage of it as they cleaned up a historic body of water.
The Bayou Teche is well known for its gorgeous scenery, but some also know about an underlying problem that many residents contribute to, trashing the Teche.
Blake Couvillion, and his group "Cajuns for Bayou Teche," cruise up and down the Teche when they're not at work, cleaning up what others left behind.
"I actually built a house on Bayou Teche right outside of Cecilia about a year ago and hopped in my boat, road up along the bayou, I just saw the great amounts of trash around where I live and I decided to do something about it."
Keeping the Teche clean is a full time job. Just in the short amount of time that we spent out on the water with Couvillion and his crew they picked up a load of trash, including a barbeque pit, a cot, even a refrigerator, all things that could've easily been properly disposed of.
Residents we spoke with say those who pollute need to take a boat ride along the bayou to realize the damage they're doing.
William Lewis: "They should get on a boat and go up and down the Teche, because it's beautiful, but when you see the trash it stifle the beauty."
While the clean up may not be painless, those who do it feel joy knowing they're making a difference.
Cajuns for Bayou Teche will be holding a large scale clean up this Sunday from 12:00 till 4:00 PM.
Those with boats are urged to come out to the Breaux Bridge boat landing and help clean up the Teche.
