DESTREHAN, La. (AP) - A memorial has been placed to the victims of a 1976 Louisiana ferry disaster that killed 77 people.
The Luling Ferry Disaster Monument was dedicated Saturday under the Hale Boggs bridge in Destrehan. The accident occurred on Oct. 20, 1976, on the Mississippi River when the ferry George Prince moved into the path of the Norwegian tanker Frosta.
The tanker struck the ferry, flipping it over. The George Prince had a full load of cars and 95 passengers and crew.
The ferry route was later replaced by the bridge.
