Grand Jury Clears Police

Posted:

An Acadia Parish Grand Jury has cleared members of the Rayne Police department for their role in a shooting in February that has left a man in a wheel chair.

Officers were trying to serve a search warrant at the home of Anthony Campbell when officers say Campbell tried to flee in his car.

Police claimed the 35 year old tried to run over a police officer in the process prompting them to open fire on Campbell's vehicle.

One of those bullets struck Campbell in the back of the head and has left him with significant physical and mental impairments.

Prior to the grand jury's decision District Attorney Mike Harson told Eyewitness news he expected Campbell would be indicted on charges of assault or battery.

Instead the grand jury has indicted Campbell on the far more serious charge of attempted first degree murder of a police officer.
