Saint Landry Road Repairs

Posted:

For a parish notoriously known for bad roads, Saint Landry Parish officials are excited about a road mixture that could help repair some surfaces that desperately need it.

Two weeks ago, Jennings Road east of Opelousas was paved over with a crushed limestone mixture. And after heavy rains, and a range of temperatures have hit our area, parish officials are pleased with the results.

After years and years of potholes, cracks and crumbling roads the best solution yet could be here. Officials are pleased that a test surface laid on Jennings Road has passed several tests in a two week period.

"Tip top condition. Just like the day we laid it. Had heavy rains, hot weather, cooler temperatures, nothing happened to foundation or the road beds" says parish President Don Menard.

It's a road surfacing mixture called OFP1, made by a the LA Ash Company based in Sulphur. While St Landry Parish has hundreds of miles of bad roads, Jennings road was chosen because of the heavy traffic from an 18 wheeler trucking company constantly on it.

The material is also inexpensive, costing about $15 a ton, whereas limestone normally used can cost almost 40 dollars a ton. It's also a portable, recyclable material.

Parish officials are now testing the product on an asphalt road near Frilot Cove. If everything works out, officials hope to at least cover some of the many dirt and gravel roads in the parish first.

The company actually gave the parish 250 tons of the road mixture to pave the two test roads. Parish officials say that is a sign of confidence in their product.
