Associated Press - June 26, 2009 8:04 AM ET

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Former New Orleans City Councilman Oliver Thomas, serving a 37-month federal prison sentence after pleading guilty to accepting bribes, has been moved to a Louisiana prison.

According to the Bureau of Prisons Web site, Thomas was moved to the Oakdale Federal Correctional Complex in southwest Louisiana. He previously was held at a federal prison near Atlanta.

Thomas will be eligible for release in September 2010.

Clarence Roby, his attorney, said the move has been a relief for Thomas' family and friends, who were unable to visit him often in Atlanta.

The federal camp at Oakdale also holds former Gov. Edwin Edwards.
