It was a bittersweet day for the town of Morrow Wednesday.
The St. Landry Parish community will see it's elementary school close its doors for good this year, as part of the parish's school desegregation order.
Wednesday, students, parents and faculty gathered to say goodbye.
Memories will soon be all that's left of Morrow Elementary School, a casualty of the parish's school desegregation order. Proud parents looked on during the school's final awards ceremony and eighth grade graduation.
Morrow Principal Sandra Gamache is one of many feeling the loss of this school, and the tradition it represents, a loss that's being felt by the entire community.
Gamache: "They've pretty much resigned themselves to the fact that we're closing and consolidating with other schools. Most of them are products of Morrow Elementary and they just hate to see the school go, because it's the focus of the community, it's about all we have left in the community other than a few churches."
Former students who are now parents themselves are sad their children will not be part of the Morrow Elementary legacy.
Many of those attending the closing ceremonies said they'll never forget the big impact this small school has had on their lives, and they'll forever treasure the memories.
As the school closes its doors for good, Morrow Elementary teachers are moving on to new assignments throughout the parish.
Morrow Principal Sandra Gamache begins a new job next week, as the new Principal of North Elementary in Opelousas.
